Coaching ourselves:
Career catalyst toolkit
The coaching ourselves career catalyst toolkit is a set of resources designed to help postdocs take charge of their own career development. The toolkit provides individuals with a structured framework for exploring their career goals, building the resilience necessary to push themselves out of their comfort zones, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and creating a plan for achieving their objectives.
The toolkit includes a range of materials, such as worksheets and discussion prompts, and other resources to guide groups or individuals through the process of self-coaching. Each of the twelve resources, has a specific aim and objectives. These were defined through a collaborative and iterative process that involved gathering feedback and insight from postdoc participants themselves.
Self-coaching topics:
- Developing coaching skills
- Finding your true north – a journey of purpose
- Developing career goals that will propel you forwards
- Who am I and why do I work?
- Making time for career development
- Grow strong: realising your potential
- Discovering and developing your personal strengths
The coaching ourselves career catalyst toolkit is designed to be flexible and adaptable to the needs and goals of each individual and group. It can be used by anyone, regardless of their career goals or stage, to take control of their career development and achieve their professional objectives.
How to use the toolkit
Creating a career development coaching program with the toolkit
The coaching ourselves career catalyst toolkit can be used to build a curriculum for a group career coaching program.
Here are some tips to help you plan and execute a successful program using the resources:
Define the goals and objectives:
Before you start planning your program, it's important to define the goals and objectives of the group coaching program. Consider the needs and aspirations of your participants, and craft a clear and measurable goal for the program.
Create a curriculum and set a schedule: Once you have defined your goals and objectives, look at the available sessions and create a curriculum that will guide your participants through the program. Determine the frequency and duration of your group coaching sessions. Consider the availability and schedules of your participants and aim to hold sessions at regular intervals throughout the time you have selected.
Build a community: Foster a sense of community among group members by creating opportunities for them to connect with one another outside of the group coaching sessions. Consider creating a private online group where participants can share resources and support one another or a buddy scheme.
Track progress: If you need to record evidence about the impact of the coaching program use metrics and assessments to track the progress of your participants throughout the program. This will also help you to make any necessary adjustments to the curriculum or approach.
Encouraging group members to track their own progress helps them to stay accountable and motivated, you can do this by implementing check-ins:
- Establish a routine: Create a routine for the check-ins. For example, start with a brief update on actions from each member, followed by a discussion of any challenges or obstacles they encountered, and end with a plan for the next steps.
- Use a tracking system: Implement a tracking system to document progress. This could be a simple spreadsheet or a more sophisticated project management tool.
- Celebrate successes: Acknowledge and celebrate successes, no matter how small. This helps to maintain motivation and encourages members to continue making progress.
- Hold each other accountable: Encourage members to hold each other accountable for their commitments. If someone falls behind, the group can offer support and help get them back on track.
By following these tips, you can facilitate a group career coaching activity that is engaging, effective, and helps your participants achieve their career goals over the course of a year. Of course, you can run a shorter or longer program, each of the resources is designed to stand alone, so you can dip in and out of whichever topics are relevant to your group of participants.

Your own program! |
Choose whatever you and your participants want! |
Choose a delivery method
Coordinated and/or facilitator-led
The coaching ourselves career catalyst toolkit resources can be led by a coach or facilitator who will guide the group through the content and activities in the resource. This approach can be particularly helpful for individuals who:
- Are new to career development and need guidance in identifying their strengths, skills, and career interests
- Need support in setting and achieving career goals
- Prefer a structured and interactive approach to learning
Do it yourself
Groups or individuals use the resources in a self-guided way. All the resources contain comprehensive instructions about how to do this. This approach can be helpful for individuals who:
- Are self-motivated and prefer to work independently
- Have limited time or resources for facilitated coaching sessions
- Have already identified their career goals and need resources to help them achieve those goals
Self-direction and peer-to-peer interaction are critical
It is important to note that this is a coaching program not a training program, an implicit aim of the toolkit is for postdocs to take ownership of their own career development, and to form a sense of community whilst doing so. Creating the space for human conversation to flourish is a critical part of the process whether facilitated or self-directed.
